Port of Tanjung Emas is a seaport in Semarang, Indonesia. It is the seaport in Semarang, the capital city of Central Java. It is located about 5 km from Tugu Muda of the city center. It was constructed in the nineteenth century by the Dutch colonial government, for use in exporting sugar and various agricultural products coming from the hinterlands in Central Java, replacing a heavily silted, pre-colonial port. The port has been operated by Pelindo III since 1985. In 2017, Pelindo III announced plans for a land reclamation of 22 hectares with a budget of USD 110 million, as part of future port development.

Places of Interest Around Tanjung Emas


As the Capital city of Central Java province, Semarang sits on the northern coast of the Java Sea. With a population of 1.8 million spread over 373.8 square kilometers, it presents a melting pot of Javanese and Chinese culture which has blended beautifully throughout the city in the form of buildings, cuisine, and meeting places across the city. Semarang has been a major port since the Dutch colonial era and remains a busy trading city today.

The rich culture and history painted the city’s architecture. The traditional Javanese carving details, old colonial buildings, vibrant Chinatown, and immaculate temples can be found all over the city. Visitors can marvel at the combination of cultural diversity and the advancing modern Javanese scene when docking at Tanjung Emas Port. Semarang is a host to a large ethnic Chinese population. Semarang is the gateway for cruise ships passenger to visit the Borobudur, Buddhist temple built half almost 900 years ago. It is one of the world’s heritage.

Borobudur Temple

Visit this majestic 9th-century Mahayana Buddhist temple in Magelang regency, 100 Km from the harbor. It is the world's largest Buddhist temple. The temple consists of nine stacked platforms, six square and three circular, topped by a central dome. It is decorated with 2,672 relief panels and 504 Buddha statues. The central dome is surrounded by 72 Buddha statues, each seated inside a perforated stupa. Due to the distance and travel time, visitors may not have a lot of time to explore this destination. Lawang Sewu

Lawang Sewu is a historic building formerly occupied by the Dutch colonies. Its name describes its main feature, in which there are thousand doors and windows in the complex. The building is rich with history during the independence and urban legend myths that attracts horror/supernatural enthusiasts to visit the landmark at all hours of the day.

Tugu Muda

Tugu Muda (The Monument of the Youth) commemorates the youth’s battle against the Japanese during the fight for the nation’s independence in 1945. It represents the spirit and passion for freedom of the time and hopes to instill that for generations to come. It is walking distance from Lawang Sewu.

Central Java Grand Mosque

Inspired by the Mecca and Medina architectural style, the mosque complex consists of three main buildings and the domed mosque in the middle, covering about 25 acres. It is a the landmark of the Muslim influence which has been in the city for centuries and a place of worship for its majority population.

Pagoda Avalokitesvara

This temple is a 7-tiered pagoda with intricate carvings and big Buddha statue in the backyard. Standing tall at 45 M, the Pagoda offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the Buddhist religious tradition firsthand.

This neighboring city in Central Java boasts charming historic buildings, delicious dishes served in local stalls and restaurants, and eclectic stores adorning the area. Take a long walk around the city and take photos of the wall murals painted on awnings and storefronts, as you bask in the warm and hospitable environment. Candi Gedong Songo
