Places of Interest Near Sabang


Part of several small islands in the area, Sabang is located in Weh Island. Like the rest of the country, Sabang has dry and wet seasons through the years, averaging between 23 - 31 Celcius degrees. The coastal life of Sabang contains a rich history. Before World War II, Sabang used to be one of the most important port cities aside from Singapore. It continued to be one of Indonesia’s commerce hubs, despite momentary halts due to political unrest and the Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami in 2004. Today, with vibrant local culture, stunning nature, and much smaller crowds, Sabang shines through as a hidden gem of Indonesian tourism.

Iboih Beach

Iboih Beach boasts a pristine coastline and a diverse marine life underneath its serene waters. It is located in West Sabang across the bay. The beach is accessible by car along the edges of the island, or by speedboat.

Sumur Tiga Beach

Sumur Tiga Beach stretches over 2 miles in white sand lined with lush tropical trees. The quaint area is rarely packed with tourists, making it the perfect area to relax and enjoy the coastal views.

Ujong Kareung Beach

Ujong Kareung Beach sits on top of a striking and sturdy rock formation. It is also the home of some of the most rare coral reefs in the area, where a diverse range of marine fish inhabits.

Kilometer Zero Monument

Indonesia is known to stretch from Sabang to Merauke, and this monument landmarks the westernmost point of the national territory. The local tourism agency also provides certifications for visitors who have stood in this circular monument.

Sabang Hill

Despite being a short distance away from the port, this resort area sits much higher at 82 metersabove sea level. Visitors can enjoy a stunning panorama while dining in the gleaming evening nights overlooking the city.

Anoi Hitam Fort

The fort is the remnants of a Japanese bunker during their occupation in the 1940s, now developed into a tourist attraction. It sits on top of a cliff overlooking the Anoi Hitam beach, providing a stunning view of the coastline.

Aceh Tsunami Museum

(1 hour 5 minutes by car and ferry)

Aceh was faced with the horrific tsunami earthquake in 2004, leaving thousands of casualties and whole cities destroyed. Today, this museum highlights how far the survivors have come since the tragedy, and how they commemorate the fallen in a hauntingly beautiful museum. Please note that this destination is located in Banda Aceh and is accessible by ferry from Balohan,Sabang.

Baiturrahman Grand Mosque

A proud symbol of culture, religion, and nationalism for Acehnese people, this mosque is tastefully ornate bronze chandeliers, Chinese marble staircases, and Belgian stained-glass windows. It is built in the 17th century and underwent major refurbishment 200 years later, following a fire incident during the Dutch colonial era. It is one of the few buildings thatsurvived the 2004 tsunami earthquakes with minor damages. Please note that this destination is located in Banda Aceh and is accessible by ferry in Balohan, Sabang.
