Places of Interest Around Kumai

Tanjung Puting National Park

Tanjung puting is covered by a complex mosaic of diverse lowland habitats. It covers an area of 〖3,040km〗^2 (or 1,174 square miles). Nipa/mangroce swamps can be found at the mouth of the river and along the sea coast. Mangroves teem with animal life. The best known animals in tanjung puting are the orangutans. Tanjung puting also boats the bizarre looking proboscis monkey with its “jimmy durante” nose as well as seven other primate species. Clouded leopards, civets, and malaysian sun bears can also be found in the park.
Distance: 550m from Kumai port.

Camp Leakey

Camp leakey has supported the research efforts of scientists and students. Project have ranged from orangutan, proboscis monkey, gibbon and leaf-eating monkey behaviour and ecology, to studies of orangutan sign language abilities and cognition, to leech behaviour, and river system ecology. As an active research facility, camp leakey welcomes day visitors with local guides. Visitors are not allowed to stay overnight at camp leakey.

Bundaran Pancasila

(28 minutes drive)
With a garuda as its centerpiece, this public square is frequented by young people who are looking to have afternoon jogs or a peaceful stroll in the park. It also offers many eateries, from the traditional roast tempeh, fried rice, to pizza. Visitors can also have a nice cup of coffee on one of the cafes nearby.

Istana Kuning

(35 minutes drive)
Despite its name, the building is not actually yellow in color. It is home to various artifacts from the Kutaringin sultanate era. Take a closer look at their weaponry, from spears to keris (the traditional dagger), intricate vases, and the painting of the preceding 14 sultans. It is believed that these paintings were created by artists with supernatural abilities.

Indrasari Market

(36 minutes drive)
Experience life as a local in this traditional market, and explore all the unique souvenirs that are available for purchase. Visitors can bring home traditional bracelets, amethyst jewelry, and miniature ships made out of sap.

Rumah Makan Dunia Laut

(21 minutes drive)
As the name suggests, this restaurant offers the best variation of freshly caught local seafood cooked in rich spices. It also provides vegetarian and vegan options upon request.
