History of Museum Negeri Mulawarman

The museum’s origins date back to the establishment of Museum Kutai, created to preserve relics of the Kutai Kingdom. It was inaugurated on November 25, 1971, by Pangdam IX Mulawarman Brigadier General 50 Kertiyo and Governor Abdoel Wahab Sjahranie.

On February 18, 1976, the museum was transferred to the Ministry of Education and Culture, officially received by Director General of Culture Prof. Dr. Ida Bagus Mantra. In 1979, the institution was renamed Museum Negeri Mulawarman of East Kalimantan Province, as stipulated by the Ministerial Decree dated May 28, 1979.

Museum Collections and Highlights

The museum houses approximately 415 collections representing East Kalimantan’s historical depth. Among the most iconic artifacts are the Yupa Inscriptions, the earliest written evidence in Indonesian history, originating from the Kutai Kingdom.

Other highlights include wooden fossils, ceremonial jars, cannons, Hindu sculptures such as Shiva Mahakala, stone tools, and traditional implements that illustrate technological, spiritual, and social development across centuries.
