Penerangan Museum: National Museum Collections & Indonesia’s Communication Heritage

Penerangan Museum is a specialized museum located in Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII), East Jakarta, dedicated to preserving the history of information, press, and communication in Indonesia. Officially recorded in the Museum Registration system, the museum serves as a center for historical collections that narrate how information media evolved from traditional to modern formats in Indonesian society. 

The museum stands as one of the significant institutions in Indonesia’s museum landscape, offering insights into the development of communication as both a social institution and a national force.

The museum is owned and managed by the Ministry of Communication and Informatics of the Republic of Indonesia, operating as a technical implementation unit under the Directorate General of Public Communication and Media. Its management responsibilities include maintaining museum collections, organizing exhibitions, and creating educational programs for the public. 

 

History of the Museum

Penerangan Museum was established to commemorate the role of information dissemination in Indonesia’s history, especially before and after independence. It was officially inaugurated on 20 April 1993 by President Soeharto, following an initiative led by Ibu Tien Soeharto and the then-Minister of Information. 

The museum’s architecture — a star with five points — symbolizes the five principles of Pancasila and represents the interconnected facets of media roles within society — from traditional to modern communication. 

 

Museum Collections

The museum holds approximately 68 registered objects that illustrate the development of communication technologies and practices. Exhibits include historical typing machines, microphones, radio equipment, and broadcasting tools. 

Artifactual displays demonstrate how media and information dissemination tools evolved through time, making Penerangan Museum a valuable educational resource for all ages.

The museum’s vision is to become a “Smart and Communicative Museum” that engages visitors with interactive, informative, and relevant historical storytelling about communication in Indonesia.
