Sasando

Sasando is a traditional musical instrument from Rote Island, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), which is also often associated with West Nusa Tenggara (NTB). This instrument is played by plucking and has a unique and melodious sound, similar to a harp or zither. The name Sasando comes from the Rote language word "sasandu," which means "vibrating or sounding instrument."

Design and Inspiration

  1. Characteristics:Sasando is shaped like a long tube made of bamboo. Around this tube, there are strings tightened, and in the middle of the tube, there is a kind of bridge used to adjust the pitch.
  2. Materials: The main materials used to make Sasando are bamboo, lontar leaves, and strings usually made of wire or nylon. Lontar leaves are shaped into a kind of cover or resonator that functions to amplify the sound.
  3. Ornaments: Sasando is often decorated with beautiful carvings on the bamboo parts. Additionally, the lontar leaves used are often adorned with simple ornaments that add to the aesthetic of this musical instrument.

Philosophy

  1. Representation of the Rote people's beliefs: The original seven strings of the Sasando represent the life cycle of a baby in the womb. The Rote people believe that a seven-month-old baby is physically perfect and, after nine months, is ready to be born into the world. Initially, Sasando had only 7 or 9 strings.
  2. Symbol of the Rote people's dependence on the lontar tree:The lontar tree or Siwalan plant is forbidden to be sold as because it is a crucial part of the Rote people's livelihood.
