History of the Museum

The museum building was initially constructed between 1844 and 1873 as the residence for Sultan Aji Tenggara and later served as an administrative palace under Sultan Ibrahim Khaliludin

The structure represents traditional Kalimantan stilt architecture known as “Kuta Imam Duyu Kina Lenja,” meaning “multi-tiered leader’s residence.”

In 1999, the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture officially designated the site, along with its adjacent Nurul Ibadah Mosque, as a National Cultural Heritage building.
