History of the Museum

The Istana Asserayah El Hasyimiah was constructed beginning in 1889 by Sultan Assyaidis Syarif Hasyim Abdul Jalil Syaifuddin of the Siak Sri Indrapura Sultanate, incorporating Malay, European, Arab, and Indian architectural elements.

After the sultanate era ended and integrated into the Republic of Indonesia, the palace became a cultural heritage site, later formally designated as a museum in 2025 by the Indonesian Ministry of Culture.

The museum collections include:

  • Royal heraldic symbols and diplomatic gifts from other kingdoms.
  • Technological and ceramic artifacts, such as European and Chinese porcelain, marbles, and branded royal utensils.
  • Weapons from the royal era, including spears, keris, and cannons.
  • Fine art pieces, such as crystal lamps and rare musical instruments from the late 19th century.
  • The palace building itself, a masterpiece of cultural architecture.

Vision of the Museum

The museum’s vision is to be a center for preserving and communicating the history and cultural legacy of the Siak Sri Indrapura Sultanate to both local and international audiences, fostering greater appreciation for Malay heritage.
