What Is Kapuas Raya Museum?

Kapuas Raya Museum is a public museum officially registered in the Indonesia Museum Registration system under the registration number 61.05.U.04.0064. It is part of the nationally recognized Museum Indonesia network, serving as a cultural institution that preserves and interprets historical, ethnographic, and cultural artifacts from the West Kalimantan region. 

Located in Sintang Regency, West Kalimantan, the museum highlights the diverse cultural heritage of local communities along the Kapuas River — the longest river in Indonesia and a historical hub of trade, cultural exchange, and human settlement. 

 

Museum Category & Type

According to official classification:

  • Museum Category: General Museum — focusing on a wide range of cultural and historical topics. 
  • Museum Type: Type B Museum — indicating a key role in regional educational programming and cultural development. 

 

Ownership & Management

The museum is owned by the Sintang Regency Government and operated by the Department of Education and Culture of Sintang Regency. As a registered national museum, it follows Indonesia’s museum principles for preserving, developing, utilizing, and communicating collections to the public. 

 

History of the Museum

Kapuas Raya Museum was founded through a collaboration between the Sintang local government and the KIT Tropenmuseum in the Netherlands, formalized in a memorandum of understanding signed on September 29, 2004. The initiative aimed to establish a cultural institution that functions as a center for heritage learning and community education. 

The museum was officially opened on October 11, 2008, offering exhibitions and programs that explore the long cultural and historical journey of West Kalimantan’s people. 

 

Museum Collections

The museum collections at Kapuas Raya include over 400 items illustrating the region’s rich past, such as:

  • Historical photographs showing life along the Kapuas River in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. 
  • Ceramics and glass bottles reflecting historical trade and material culture. 
  • Ethnographic objects including traditional weapons, clothing, and household tools. 
  • Paintings and historical documentation highlighting significant cultural moments. 

This collection offers visitors deep insights into the diversity and history of Kalimantan communities, fostering appreciation for Indonesia’s vast cultural landscape.
