Before occupying its current location, the museum experienced several relocations, including sites at Ndalem Brotokusuman Complex and the former official residence of General Sudirman, before finally being moved to the former Korem 072/Pamungkas building on Jl. Jenderal Sudirman No. 75 in 1980.

The museum was officially inaugurated as the Central Museum of the Indonesian Army Dharma Wiratama through a decree issued by the Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Army (Kasad) on 30 August 1982, formally establishing its role as a center for preserving the history of TNI AD.
