History of Museum Negeri Banten
Museum Negeri Banten was initially established in 2013 at the Banten Cultural Office within the Provincial Government Center. To improve accessibility and strengthen its historical context, the museum was later relocated to the former Governor’s Pendopo building in Serang City.
This relocation was based on strategic considerations, including its central location and the building’s status as a cultural heritage site with historical significance. The museum was officially inaugurated on October 29, 2015, by Governor Rano Karno, following the Governor’s Decree on the use of the Pendopo building as the Provincial Museum of Banten.
Museum Collections and Highlights
The museum houses 71 collections representing Banten’s cultural and historical diversity. Highlights include replicas of the Ganesha statue and Munjul Inscription, a model of the Lebak Cibeduk terraced structure, Ciomas traditional machete, ship chain fossils, mechanical calculators, wooden shields, and various coins and banknotes from the colonial period to modern Indonesia.
These collections reflect Banten’s strategic role in Indonesian history, particularly in trade, governance, and cultural exchange.
