Pulau Sangalaki is also known for its beautiful underwater world and is an important habitat for turtles. The island is a conservation area in the Derawan Islands. About 95% of the area, or roughly 264 hectares, is marine waters with natural beach forest ecosystems, seagrass beds, and coral reefs.
