What Is Song Terus Museum?

Song Terus Museum is a cultural and history museum located in Weru, Wareng Village, Punung, Pacitan Regency, East Java, Indonesia. This museum focuses on the prehistoric journey of humans, cultural evolution and environmental changes in the Gunung Sewu region from the Pleistocene to the Holocene era. 

The museum is officially registered in the Museum Indonesia registry (NPNM 35.01.K.01.0292), making it part of the national museum network — a key component of Museum Nasional Indonesia’s cultural preservation system

 

History of the Museum

The Song Terus site contains important prehistoric cultural remains showing early human activity in the Gunung Sewu area. To preserve and share this history, the Directorate of Cultural Preservation and Museum Affairs under Indonesia’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology initiated the establishment of this museum. Its building design was selected through a competition won by PT Urbane Indonesia. Construction took place from 2016 to 2019, with interior exhibits completed in 2020. The museum opened initially in October 2022 and was officially inaugurated on 16 May 2024 by government dignitaries.

Song Terus Museum is categorized as a Special Museum, focusing on prehistoric cultural heritage and presenting thematic exhibitions revolving around early human tools, fossils, and cultural evolution. Being part of the Museum Indonesia registry confirms its official status in the national museum system. 

 

Management

The museum is managed by the Directorate of Cultural Preservation and Museums under Indonesia’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology, specifically through the Indonesian Heritage Agency (IHA), which oversees museum and cultural heritage institutions across the country. 

Management focuses on artifact preservation, exhibition curation, public educational programs, research support and community engagement. 

 

Collections

Song Terus Museum houses more than 4,600 artifacts from prehistoric eras to traditional cultural items. Highlights include: 

  • Prehistoric tools and stone implements. 
  • Fossils of fauna and flora from ancient ecosystems. 
  • Artifacts reflecting cultural continuities in local traditions. 
  • Reproductions and displays of prehistoric human life, contextualizing early human behavior and survival. 

Artifacts are arranged chronologically, illustrating the long span of human existence and adaptation in the region.
