What Is Museum Batam Raja Ali Haji?

Museum Batam Raja Ali Haji is a history museum in Batam City, Riau Islands Province, officially registered in the National Museum Registration system with registration number 21.71.U.05.0200 and part of Museum Indonesia, a nationwide network of museums in Indonesia. 

The museum preserves artifacts and narratives documenting Batam’s historical evolution from the Riau-Lingga Sultanate era to modern urban development, offering educational insight into cultural heritage. 

Type & Classification

It is classified as a General Museum (Museum Umum) and has been awarded a Type B certification by the Indonesian Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, indicating a high standard of museum quality and management. 

History of the Museum

The building housing the museum was originally the main pavilion for the 25th National Musabaqah Tilawatil Quran (MTQ) in 2014, later transferred from the Riau Islands provincial government to Batam’s city government. 

Plans for establishing a museum began in 2019, and the museum was officially registered nationally on July 31, 2019. Its name, honoring Raja Ali Haji, a national hero and Malay literary figure, was formally designated on October 10, 2019

The museum opened to the public on December 18, 2020, coinciding with Batam’s anniversary, and continues to expand its exhibitions and visitor facilities. 

Collections

The museum’s exhibits cover Batam’s historical milestones, including:
• Riau-Lingga Sultanate era
• Dutch and Japanese colonial periods
• Indonesian independence era
• Regional government and Batam Authority era
• Malay cultural artifacts and modern infrastructure development. 

Registered data notes around 79 artifacts including historical objects, photos, and cultural items. 

Interactive displays such as QR Codes provide detailed information to visitors, enhancing learning and engagement. 

Management

The museum is owned by the Batam City Government and managed by its Department of Culture and Tourism, responsible for curating exhibits, preserving collections, and organizing educational programs. 

The museum also invites school groups and hosts outreach programs to introduce history to students and wider audiences.
