Natuna Museum

Natuna Museum is a public museum situated in Natuna Regency, Riau Islands Province, Indonesia. It functions as a cultural institution that preserves and exhibits the historical and cultural heritage of the Natuna area, offering visitors insights into the region’s past and traditions.

The museum serves as a gateway to understanding Natuna’s role in maritime history, local customs, and the diverse cultural narrative shaped by centuries of interaction both locally and across Southeast Asia.

Museum Type and Management

Natuna Museum is officially classified as a public museum, meaning it covers a broad range of cultural and historical topics rather than focusing on a specific theme. It plays an essential educational role by providing exhibitions that educate the public about local history, cultural continuity, and the dynamics of regional identity.

Although it has not yet been standardized into a specific museum sub-type under the national system, the museum’s collections and programs reflect its broad cultural mandate.

Natuna Museum is owned and managed by the Natuna Regency Office of Education and Culture (Cultural Division). The museum’s management team oversees the preservation of the facility and its exhibitions, curates educational programs, and works with local stakeholders to enrich cultural understanding and community engagement.

History of Natuna Museum

Plans to establish Natuna Museum began in 2012 following discoveries of cultural artifacts, including Chinese ceramics from several historic dynasties found both on land and underwater off the Natuna coast.

After completing the master plan and design, the construction of the museum started in 2016, with building phases continuing until 2020. Upon completion of the physical structure, the interior exhibition design was developed with support from the Ministry of Education and Culture.

Natuna Museum was officially handed over to local authorities on September 2, 2022, and formally opened to the public on July 27, 2023, coinciding with the anniversary of Ranai, the regency’s capital.

Vision of Natuna Museum

The vision of Natuna Museum is to establish Museum Natuna as a house of civilization at the northern boundary of the Republic of Indonesia.

This vision underscores the museum’s goal to serve as a cultural and historical hub that represents the identity and heritage of the Natuna community within the broader national and maritime context.

To achieve its vision, Natuna Museum pursues the following missions:

  1. Protecting, maintaining, and developing the museum’s collections for future generations.
