Museum Kekhatuan Semaka

What Is the Kekhatuan Semaka Museum?

The Kekhatuan Semaka Museum is a historical museum located in Sanggi Unggak Village, Bandar Negeri Semuong District, Tanggamus Regency, Lampung, Indonesia. It preserves artifacts and cultural heritage from the Semaka Kingdom, a local coastal kingdom that existed in Lampung from the 15th to 18th century.

The museum serves as an educational site where visitors can learn about local traditions, historical events, and heritage collections that depict life in the region during different historical periods.

Museum Category & Type

Museum Kekhatuan Semaka is classified as a specialized museum focusing on cultural and historic objects connected to the Semaka Kingdom. Its collection includes traditional clothing, weapons, ceramics, and other items of historical importance.

The variety of objects reflects both local cultural practices and historical interactions between Lampung and other kingdoms through trade and political alliances.

Museum Management

The museum is privately managed by descendants of the Semaka royal lineage, specifically the 13th generation of local leadership, who maintain and exhibit the museum’s collections for public viewing.

Because many of the objects are family heirlooms and community artifacts, the museum preserves both tangible and intangible elements of regional culture and history.

History of the Museum

Museum Kekhatuan Semaka was established to conserve historic items from the Semaka Kingdom, a significant political and cultural center in Lampung’s past. Built on land significant to local history, the museum was formally inaugurated in April 2015

Originally intended to be built in the Tanggamus district center, it was moved to its current village location to preserve the ownership and historical identity tied to the local community.

Museum Collections

The museum houses hundreds of historical objects, including:

  • Traditional wedding attire and ceremonial garments.
  • Weapons and armor like swords and old cannons.
  • Ancient ceramics from foreign and local origins.
  • Household items, textiles, and tools used by past generations.

These collections reveal insights into regional life, social structure, and cultural practices of the Lampung coastal community.

Museum Vision

The museum’s vision is to be a center for conserving and interpreting cultural heritage for educational and cultural tourism purposes, aligning with the definition of a museum as an institution that protects and communicates collections for public benefit.

Museum Mission

The mission of the museum includes:

  1. Preserving historical objects and cultural heritage associated with the Semaka Kingdom.
  2. Providing history education to visitors and local communities.
  3. Supporting cultural tourism and historical awareness in the region.

Role in Museum Registration & Cultural Heritage

While some local museums in Indonesia may not yet be fully documented within the Museum Nasional registry, institutions like Kekhatuan Semaka Museum perform essential functions by safeguarding cultural heritage and enabling research and education.

Such museums are valuable additions to Indonesia’s cultural landscape, contributing to the broader network of Museum Indonesia and enriching understanding of local histories throughout the country.
