ARTJOG: The Barometer of Contemporary Art in Indonesia

First held in 2008 under the name Jogja Art Fair, ARTJOG began as part of the Festival Kesenian Yogyakarta (Yogyakarta Arts Festival). By 2010, it had evolved into ARTJOG and established itself as Indonesia’s premier contemporary art exhibition. It is now considered a barometer of the country’s contemporary art scene, attracting art enthusiasts, critics, and collectors from around the world.

ARTJOG showcases an eclectic mix of visual art forms, from two-dimensional paintings to three-dimensional sculptures, performance art, and large-scale installations. It is a well-curated and organized event, featuring guided curatorial tours, artist talks, live performances, and even historical tours of ASRI (Akademi Seni Rupa Indonesia), particularly when the event is hosted at the Jogja National Museum.

At the helm of ARTJOG’s success is its visionary founder and CEO, Heri Pemad, a trailblazer in Indonesia’s art scene. In 2004, Heri established Art Management, which later evolved into PT Heri Pemad Management in 2008. His leadership has propelled ARTJOG into an internationally renowned event.

This year, ARTJOG 2024 will run for 65 days, from June 28 to September 1, 2024, at the Jogja National Museum. Located 1.3 kilometers west of Yogyakarta’s iconic Kilometer Zero, the museum can be reached easily by private vehicle or public transportation. If you’re traveling from Kilometer Zero, head west along Jalan KH. Ahmad Dahlan, continue towards Pasar Serangan, and you’ll find the museum on your left.

Theme for 2024: Motif: Prophecies

Under the curatorial guidance of Hendro Wiyanto, this year’s theme, Motif: Prophecies, explores Indonesia’s rich cultural heritage of prophecy through mediums like poetry, teachings, and symbolic motifs.

The theme challenges artists to delve into Indonesia’s past while imagining potential futures. This year’s exhibition will feature the works of 47 distinguished artists from Indonesia and abroad, promising visitors a rich tapestry of thought-provoking and visually stunning creations.
