Mental Health Museum Lawang: A Unique National Museum

The Mental Health Museum Lawang is officially listed in the Museum Registration system and forms part of the Indonesian Museum network. Located at the Dr. Radjiman Wediodiningrat Mental Hospital in Lawang, Malang Regency, East Java, this institution is recognized as the first and only mental health museum in Indonesia

History of the Museum

Officially opened on June 23, 2009, the museum commemorates the long history of the Dr. Radjiman Wediodiningrat Mental Hospital, which dates back to its initial formal opening on June 23, 1902, as Krankzinigen Gesticht te Lawangduring Dutch colonial rule. 

The museum was established to preserve and showcase the historical progression of mental health treatment in Indonesia, from early practices to more contemporary medical approaches. 

 

Museum Collections

With over 700 items on display, the museum’s collections include:

  • Colonial-era medical apparatus for neurological and psychiatric care.
  • Restraints and therapeutic devices used in past treatments. 
  • Photographs, archival documents, and patient records giving insight into historic clinical practice. 
  • Cultural artifacts and expressive works by patients, broadening understanding of mental health contexts. 

These collections serve educational purposes and encourage reflection on past societal health challenges.
