Archaeological Museum Onrust

What Is Archaeological Museum Onrust?

The Archaeological Museum Onrust is a special museum dedicated to archaeological finds from the Onrust Archaeological Park, which covers Onrust Island, Cipir Island, Kelor Island, and Bidadari Island in the Thousand Islands near Jakarta. It is registered under the Museum Indonesia system, connecting it to Indonesia’s broader national museum network.

History of the Museum

The sites around Onrust Island were historically significant as a VOC (Dutch East India Company) port and shipyard beginning in the 17th century. In 1972, the islands were legally protected as historical areas. In 2002, the complex became the Onrust Archaeological Park managed by the DKI Jakarta Cultural Office. Later administrative changes placed the park under the Jakarta Maritime Museum Unit, forming part of a larger heritage management strategy. By 2015, the area was formally designated a protected cultural heritage zone.
