Sultan Agung Hanyokrokusumo (1593-1645) was the third king who ruled the Islamic Mataram Sultanate from 1613-1645. Sultan Agung is known as one of the kings who succeeded in bringing the Islamic Mataram kingdom to the peak of its glory. Reported from the BPCB DIY page, there are several written sources such as Babad Momana and Babad ing Sangkala which mention that Sultan Agung ordered the construction of the royal cemetery. The construction of the royal cemetery complex on Merak Hill began in 1554 Saka or 1632 AD. Sultan Agung built the tomb complex in Imogiri with the intention of being used as a cemetery for the family and descendants of the kings of the Islamic Mataram Sultanate.
