History of The Museum Memorial Kedaton Sultan Ternate

The museum building was originally constructed on 24 November 1813 under Sultan Muhammad Ali. Designed with an octagonal shape that symbolically resembles a resting lion, the structure sits atop Bukit Limau, facing the sea with Mount Gamalama in the backdrop, a site that offers both strategic and cultural significance.

In 1981, the building’s management was officially transferred to the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture, while it continued to serve as part of the royal residence. Following restoration, it was inaugurated in 1982 by Education and Culture Minister Dr. Daoed Joesoef as the Memorial Kedaton Sultan Ternate.
