What Is Batiwakkal Museum?

Batiwakkal Museum is a recognized museum listed in Indonesia’s National Museum Registration and part of the official Museum Indonesia network. Located in Berau Regency, East Kalimantan, this museum specializes in preserving the historical legacy of the Gunung Tabur Sultanate and regional cultural identity. 

Originally built on the former palace of the sultanate, Batiwakkal Museum combines historical architecture with curated collections that narrate the story of a once powerful Malay-Islamic kingdom in eastern Borneo.

History of Batiwakkal Museum

The museum was established following a local initiative by members of the royal lineage of Gunung Tabur, including Aji Putri Nurhayati, Aji Putri Nural Aini, Aji Putri Kannik Berau Sanipah, and Aji Iskandar Ayoeb bin Muhammad Ayoeb. It was formally inaugurated on 16 September 1992, marking its importance as a cultural institution in East Kalimantan. 

Originally part of a royal palace, Batiwakkal Museum now stands as a reminder of the region’s political and cultural history. 

 

Museum Collections

The museum’s collections include:

  • Paintings of rulers and royal ceremonies, offering insight into noble traditions. 
  • Royal throne and ceremonial furniture used during official functions. 
  • Traditional royal attire, reflecting identity and ceremonial life. 
  • Weapons and armaments from historical periods of Berau. 
  • Etnographic objects capturing cultural expressions of power, belief, and tradition.
