Historical Background
The history of UPTD North Sumatra State Museum is deeply rooted in cultural significance. Officially, the museum was established and inaugurated on April 19, 1982, by the Minister of Education and Culture, Dr. Daoed Joesoef. However, the origins of the museum date back to 1954, when Indonesia’s first President, Ir. Soekarno, placed the initial collection in the form of a pair of makara, distinctive archaeological objects. This early contribution led the museum to also be known as Gedung Arca.
The museum building is designed with architectural elements that represent traditional houses of various ethnic groups in North Sumatra, including Malay, Batak Toba, Simalungun, Karo, Mandailing, Pakpak, and Nias. The museum stands on a site covering more than 10,000 square meters, featuring a two-storey main building that functions as permanent and temporary exhibition spaces.
