The Balanga Museum is a general museum located in Palangka Raya, Central Kalimantan, Indonesia, officially registered under the Museum Registration system with NPNM 62.71.U.03.0066. It is part of the Museum Indonesianetwork, preserving valuable museum collections that reflect the history, culture, and natural heritage of the region. 

What Is Balanga Museum?

Balanga Museum serves as a cultural institution dedicated to collecting, preserving, and exhibiting artefacts and objects that tell the story of Central Kalimantan’s indigenous cultures, especially the Dayak community, as well as the region’s natural and historical context. The museum’s exhibits provide visitors with insights into traditional life, rituals, and local craftsmanship.

The museum is owned by the Government of Central Kalimantan Province and managed by the Department of Culture and Tourism of Central Kalimantan Province

History of the Museum

The museum was established in 1972 by the local government and officially opened on April 6, 1973 as Balanga Museum. In 1990, it was recognized as the Provincial Museum of Central Kalimantan. Later, in 2017, it became an operational technical unit (UPT) under provincial cultural management. 

The museum building was formerly used as the National Council Monument Building (GMDN) before being repurposed as a museum. 

Museum Collections

Balanga Museum houses extensive national museum collections, classified into multiple categories such as geology, biology, ethnography, archeology, history, numismatics, philology, ceramics, fine arts, and technology. These collections include traditional weapons, ritual objects, local tools, and artefacts that highlight the cultural richness of the Dayak and other local communities.

The museum’s vision is to develop the institution as a cultural, educational, and tourism resource in Central Kalimantan. 

Mission

To support its vision, the museum’s mission includes maintaining facilities, promoting the museum’s role, preserving collections, enhancing staff capacity, positioning the museum as a cultural study center, contributing to tourism, and fostering cultural awareness.
