Tebing Breksi: A Unique Destination in a Former Mining Area

Tebing Breksi is one of the leading tourist destinations in Yogyakarta, offering the uniqueness of artistic breccia stone walls from a former mining site managed by the residents of Sambirejo Village.

The location is quite strategic and easy to reach, as it is situated close to other popular destinations such as Prambanan Temple, Ratu Boko Temple, and Ijo Temple.

The Attractions of Tebing Breksi

The main charm of Tebing Breksi lies in its giant stone walls adorned with artistic relief carvings of wayang stories by local artists, including figures like Arjuna, the crowned dragon, and the Semar statue.

The natural fractures in the cliff walls provide an artistic texture resembling a layer cake, which is a geological trace of the ancient Nglanggeran Volcano's activity from millions of years ago.

This visual beauty makes Tebing Breksi a favorite spot for aesthetic photography, ranging from casual selfies to professional shoots, such as pre-wedding sessions.

From the top of the cliff, visitors can enjoy a stunning panorama of Yogyakarta, including views of planes taking off and landing, as well as a romantic sunset atmosphere.

To ensure a comfortable visit when climbing the stairs to the summit, tourists are advised to bring sunglasses, umbrellas, and drinking water to avoid the heat and dehydration. Visitors will need to climb a set of stairs to reach the peak.

The History of Tebing Breksi

Originally, Tebing Breksi was a natural stone mining area managed by the local community. The rocks were traditionally cut to be used as decorative materials for buildings.

In 2014, the government officially closed mining activities in the area after scientific studies found that the rocks originated from the volcanic activity of the Ancient Nglanggeran Volcano.

Following the closure, the area was designated as a protected site. Creative residents then transformed the former mine into a unique tourist destination. Tebing Breksi was officially inaugurated by Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X on May 30, 2015.

Today, Tebing Breksi stands as a success story for Sambirejo Tourism Village, significantly boosting the local economy and earning a spot in Indonesia's top 50 best tourism villages.
