Dongkelan, located southwest of the Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat Palace, was a gift from Hamengkubuwana I to Kiai Syihabuddin for defeating his own son-in-law, Raden Mas Said (Mangkunegara I). The conflict arose because Hamengkubuwana I was disturbed by Raden Mas Said's inauguration as the first Duke of Mangkunegaran. Hamengkubuwana I chose to defeat Raden Mas Said without injuring him, by asking for Syihabuddin's help.
