Historical Background of Museum Linggam Cahaya

The construction of Museum Linggam Cahaya began in August 2002 and was completed on May 7, 2003, when it was officially named Museum Mini Linggam Cahaya. The initial arrangement of collections sourced from the official residence of the Lingga Subdistrict Head started on June 14, 2003.

As Lingga Regency continued to develop, a new museum building was constructed to accommodate the growing collection. The transfer of collections to the new building took place on February 1, 2015, followed by the official inauguration and public opening of the museum on March 1, 2015.

Museum Linggam Cahaya is a general museum that presents collections related to the history, culture, and daily life of the Malay community in Lingga Regency. It is officially registered under the National Museum Registration Number (NPNM) 21.04.U.04.0121, confirming its recognized status as a national museum institution.

The museum aims to serve as a medium for education, cultural preservation, and historical information.

Museum Type and Classification

Based on museum classification, Museum Linggam Cahaya is categorized as a General Museum, as its collections cover various aspects of community life. Institutionally, it is classified as a Type B Museum, indicating its capacity to provide public services, manage collections, and implement educational and cultural programs at the regional level.

Ownership and Management

The museum is owned by the Government of Lingga Regency, reflecting the local government’s commitment to preserving Malay cultural heritage. Its management and operations are carried out by the Department of Culture of Lingga Regency, which oversees museum administration, collection care, and visitor services.

Museum Linggam Cahaya Collection

Museum Linggam Cahaya currently holds 49 collections, reflecting the richness of local cultural heritage. These include storage jars, ceramics, floral-patterned bowls, pandan mats, rotary telephones, old diplomas, traditional weapons such as daggers and spears, and traditional attire like women’s Malay garments. Certificates related to cultural practices, including Tudung Manto and Inai Dance, further enrich the museum’s collection.
