History of the Museum

The museum was founded on March 30, 1975, based on a proposal by representatives in the regional government and support from national leadership. It was officially inaugurated on April 21, 1977, by the Regent of Jepara at that time. The establishment of the museum aimed to preserve Kartini’s legacy and personal belongings, as well as historical items associated with her brother, R.M.P. Sosrokartono.

The museum complex stands on a land area of over 5,210 square meters, with a building footprint of approximately 890 square meters. When viewed from above, the arrangement of its main buildings resembles the letters “K,” “T,” and “N,” symbolizing “Kartini.”

Collections

The museum features a wide array of belongings and artifacts, including:

  • Personal items of R.A. Kartini such as photos, letters, furniture, a sewing machine, and personal effects.
  • His brother R.M.P. Sosrokartono’s belongings, reflecting family history and intellectual heritage.
  • Local cultural and ancient artifacts from Jepara, including ceramics, traditional carvings, textiles, and archaeological finds.
  • Skeletal remains of a giant fish named “Joko Tuwo,” discovered in the waters near the Karimunjawa Islands.

The museum’s displays are organized into thematic rooms covering Kartini’s life, ancient Jepara artifacts, family heritage, and local craft traditions.
