History of the Museum

The establishment of Central Java Ranggawarsita Museum began in 1975 as part of a regional initiative to strengthen cultural preservation and museum development in Central Java. After several years of construction and preparation, the museum was officially inaugurated on July 5, 1989, by Prof. Fuad Hasan, then Minister of Education and Culture of Indonesia.

The museum is named after Raden Ngabehi Ranggawarsita, a prominent Javanese poet and intellectual from the Surakarta Palace, known for his philosophical literary works and contributions to Javanese cultural thought. The name symbolizes the museum’s mission to preserve knowledge, wisdom, and cultural values for future generations.
