Historically, the museum is known as the Balaputradeva Museum. It was established to collect, preserve, and exhibit cultural objects, historical relics, and artifacts that reflect the long journey of South Sumatran society through various historical periods.

History of the Museum
South Sumatra State Museum was inaugurated on November 5, 1984, under the name Provincial Museum of South Sumatra. Over time, it developed into one of Palembang’s leading cultural institutions.
The name Balaputradeva was adopted in honor of one of the great kings of the Sriwijaya Empire in the 9th century CE, symbolizing the region’s maritime and cultural glory. Major physical development of the museum building took place during the 1997/1998 fiscal year.
Today, the museum oversees two main units: the South Sumatra State Museum (Balaputradeva) and the Textile Museum. Ownership and management are under the South Sumatra Provincial Government through the Provincial Office of Culture and Tourism.

Notable exhibits include artifacts from prehistoric periods and the Sriwijaya Empire, traditional Palembang cultural objects, replicas of ancient inscriptions from Bukit Siguntang, miniatures and artifacts of traditional houses such as Rumah Limas and Rumah Ulu, as well as manuscripts and written materials documenting social life from ancient times to the modern period.
