Noken bag

Noken is a traditional craft unique to Papua, including the Papua Selatan region. This bag is made using hand-knitting or weaving techniques with natural fibers such as tree bark, pandan leaves, or orchid fibers. Recognized as an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO since 2012, Noken plays a vital role in the daily lives of the Papuan people.

Features
Noken has a unique shape resembling a large, flexible pouch. It is commonly used by hanging it over the head, with the bag resting on the back. Its colors vary, typically showcasing natural hues like brown or green, but traditional dyes may also be applied to create specific patterns. These motifs often reflect the natural environment of Papua, such as animals, plants, and simple geometric designs.

Philosophical Meaning
Noken symbolizes independence, hard work, and unity within the Papuan community. In Papuan culture, it also represents life, as it is used to carry garden produce, daily necessities, and even babies. Additionally, it serves as a symbol of peace, frequently utilized in traditional ceremonies or as a token of friendship.

Functions of Noken in Papua Selatan Society

  1. Traditional Carrying Tool: Used to transport harvests such as yams, vegetables, and fruits.
  2. Cultural Symbol: Worn during traditional ceremonies as a mandatory accessory, such as in welcoming guests or performing rituals.
  3. Sign of Respect: Given as a gift to honor or express friendship between individuals or groups.
  4. Creative Economy: Today, Noken has also become a high-value handicraft product, sought after as a unique Papuan souvenir.

Uniqueness of Noken
The uniqueness of Noken lies in the natural materials used and its entirely manual production process. Each bag carries a story and unique identity reflecting its maker. Additionally, its flexibility makes it versatile for various purposes."
