Exploring the hidden beauty of the Flores interior feels incomplete without visiting the legendary Waerebo Tourism Village.

This destination offers a unique experience of living above the clouds with a touch of culture that remains incredibly pure. Every corner is waiting for you to explore.

Getting to Know Waerebo Tourism Village

Located in Satar Lenda Village at an altitude of 1,100 meters above sea level, Waerebo is a remote village surrounded by mountains and dense tropical forests in Manggarai Regency. It borders the Komodo National Park directly, making it a favorite ecotourism destination that earned a UNESCO award in 2012.

Often dubbed the "paradise above the clouds," this village offers spectacular natural beauty and the iconic conical traditional house architecture known as Mbaru Niang. Its unique shape serves as a symbol of the local community's cultural identity, which has been preserved for centuries.

The architectural uniqueness and the warmth of the local residents make this village a world-class ecotourism gem that must be on your travel list. Let’s dive deeper into the charm of this internationally recognized village.

The History of Waerebo Tourism Village

Waerebo's tourism milestones began in 1984 with the visit of Simon and Claus, followed by Japanese photographer Matsuda Shuikhi in 1994. Publications by British anthropologist Catherine Allerton later drew the interest of the Manggarai Local Government, which began renovating the Mbaru Niang in 1998.

The period from 2005 to 2007 served as a turning point for massive promotion through INDECON’s assistance and coverage by National Geographic Traveler with UNESCO's support. During this time, the community was encouraged to generate additional income through the tourism sector and resource management.

In 2008, architect Yori Antar initiated a total restoration of the aging Mbaru Niang to preserve ancestral heritage through the Rumah Asuh Foundation. Collaboration with various donors and ministries enabled the construction of lodging facilities that still respect local customary laws.

The period from 2012 to 2016 marked global recognition through UNESCO's highest award and the INFEST program for local capacity building. This initiative helped the community develop administrative systems, tourism services, and souvenir products based on local sustainable food.
