Siwalima Museum: Preserving Maluku’s Cultural & Natural Heritage

Siwalima Museum is a public cultural institution registered in the Museum Registration system and part of the Indonesian Museum network. Situated in Ambon City, Maluku Province, Indonesia, it functions to preserve, manage, and exhibit a wide range of museum collections reflecting the cultural, historical, and natural richness of the Maluku region.

  • Category: General Museum – reflecting diverse cultural and historical subjects. 
  • Type: Type B Museum – denoting its significant educational and cultural conservation role at the provincial level. 

These categories underline the museum’s broad role in preserving and presenting heritage important to the people of Maluku and Indonesia. 

 

Ownership & Management

Siwalima Museum is owned by the Maluku Provincial Government and managed by the Maluku Provincial Department of Education and Culture. The management is responsible for collection care, exhibition programming, and educational outreach to visitors. 

 

History of Siwalima Museum

The museum traces its roots to early 1970s efforts to gather and preserve cultural artefacts in Maluku. Initial collections from a 1971 exhibition by the Gereja Protestan Maluku (GPM) and objects seized from foreign researchers laid the foundation of the museum. It was officially inaugurated on March 26, 1977, after its establishment on November 8, 1973

The name “Siwalima” comes from local traditional terms Siwa and Lima, representing historical groupings of kingdoms in southern and northern Maluku respectively. 

 

Museum Collections

Siwalima Museum houses more than 5,300 registered collections, covering at least 10 categories:

  • Geological and biological specimens
  • Ethnographic cultural artifacts
  • Archaeological and historical objects
  • Numismatic and heraldic items
  • Filological and ceramic pieces
  • Technological and fine arts collections

These items portray the cultural diversity, natural environment, and long history of human activity in the Maluku region.

  3. Preserving museum collections to safeguard cultural heritage. 
  4. Improving documentation and collection access through better registration systems.
