Museum Kereta Api Kota Sawahlunto is one of the most important historical tourism destinations in West Sumatra, preserving the long history of railway transportation development in Indonesia. This museum stands as a silent witness to colonial railway activities and serves as an educational center that introduces the crucial role of railways in supporting coal mining activities in Sawahlunto.

The existence of Museum Kereta Api Kota Sawahlunto plays a strategic role in preserving national cultural and historical heritage. Located in a former colonial railway station building, the museum offers an authentic historical experience that allows visitors to understand how the railway transportation system significantly contributed to the economic and social development of Sawahlunto.

History of Museum Kereta Api Kota Sawahlunto

The museum occupies a railway station building constructed by the Dutch Colonial Government in 1902. Initially, the station functioned as the main transportation hub for coal distribution from Sawahlunto mines to various regions in West Sumatra. Railway operations continued from the early 19th century until the mid-20th century.

As coal production declined in 2000, railway activities in Sawahlunto gradually ceased. In 2003, railway operations officially stopped, marking the beginning of the plan to transform Sawahlunto Station into a railway museum. As part of heritage preservation efforts, PT Kereta Api Indonesia collaborated with the Sawahlunto City Government to repurpose the station into a museum. Museum Kereta Api Kota Sawahlunto was officially inaugurated on December 17, 2005, by the Vice President of Indonesia, Jusuf Kalla.

Museum Kereta Api Kota Sawahlunto is a specialized museum dedicated to preserving, educating, and providing information about railway history in Sumatra, particularly in West Sumatra. The museum serves as a learning center that highlights the important role of railways as the main transportation mode for coal distribution during the colonial era until the mid-20th century.

The museum is officially registered with the National Museum Registration Number (NPNM) 13.73.K.05.0114, confirming its legal status as a cultural and historical preservation institution in Indonesia.
