2. Visit Historic Buildings

Did you know that Liya Togo has two historical buildings that are still standing and well-maintained? These buildings are the Liya Fort, which surrounds the village, and the Mubarok Mosque. Both are remnants of the Buton Kingdom. Liya Fort, also known as the Royal Fort, is made of large mountain stones, covers an area of 52 hectares, and has three layers. Within the innermost layer of the fort stands the Mubarok Mosque, which has been around since 1546 and features early 20th-century architecture.

 

3. Experience Various Cultures

Prepare to be amazed by the diverse cultures of Liya Togo. Many traditions, games, and customs are still alive in this village. Upon arrival, visitors will be welcomed with a traditional cloth, tamburu music, and the Honari Mosega dance. Then, you can watch the graceful Lariangi dance performed by the village women. Don’t miss the Karia'a ceremony, a coming-of-age ritual for both boys and girls, as well as the traditional Kansalu game, where players kick bamboo to hit a target.

Traditional dishes to try in the village include perangi (Wakatobi-style sashimi), karasi (crispy rice noodles), dole fish nuggets, hesoami, hegule, and Sampalu juice.

 

6. Take Home Souvenirs from Wakatobi

In addition to their culinary skills, the women and villagers of Liya Togo are also skilled at crafting handwoven products. Visitors can watch the craft of making woven fabric (homoru) used for sarongs, shawls, headscarves, and bags. For handicrafts, there are pandan leaf woven mats, recycled products turned into bags, and Katu Bangko (traditional food covers). These make perfect souvenirs!
