A Fresh Look at Jakarta: 3 Revitalized Attractions

Jakarta, Indonesia's bustling capital, is undergoing a remarkable transformation. With the capital city shifting its status to "Daerah Khusus Jakarta" (Special Area of Jakarta) following the establishment of the new capital city in Kalimantan Timur, the city’s attractions have also received significant upgrades. Whether you’re a frequent visitor or new to Jakarta, these revitalized destinations offer fresh experiences with modern touches, without losing their cultural essence. Here’s a closer look at three iconic spots that will make your visit unforgettable.

1. Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII)

In February 2023, Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, or TMII, underwent a transformation to better showcase the country’s rich cultural diversity. With its new “Indonesia Opera” concept, TMII’s mission is to reflect Indonesia’s multicultural identity while maintaining its original vision of having 70% green open spaces and 30% built-up areas.

One of the standout features of the revamped TMII is its commitment to sustainability. Now a low-emission zone, TMII has restricted private vehicles and motorbikes, only allowing electric vehicles to enter. Visitors can use the convenient, free electric shuttle buses (angling) to tour the park or take the scenic cable car ride, Garuda Kencana. There are also wide pedestrian paths with special accommodations for the disabled, shaded by lush trees, making walking around a pleasant experience.

Among the must-see attractions is the Tirta Cerita Water Fountain located at the Plaza Promenade. This modern water show uses water screen technology to present captivating animations of Indonesian legends, enhanced by traditional music, vibrant lighting, and a mesmerizing drone light show every weekend. The fountain show is free of charge and runs daily at 6:45 PM (with an additional drone show on weekends).

Ticket prices for TMII are affordable:

- General Admission: IDR 35,000 (approx. USD 2.25)

- Motorcycle: IDR 15,000 (approx. USD 1)

- Car: IDR 35,000 (approx. USD 2.25)

- Bicycle: IDR 10,000 (approx. USD 0.65)

- Bus/Truck: IDR 60,000 (approx. USD 3.80)

TMII is open from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM, and all transactions are cashless, so make sure your phone is charged for payments or photos.

2. Taman Ismail Marzuki (TIM)

Taman Ismail Marzuki (TIM), Jakarta’s cultural heart, underwent revitalization in 2023 to enhance its artistic atmosphere. The revamped complex now offers a modern, dynamic space for the arts, complete with theaters, art galleries, and cultural spaces.

One of the key highlights at TIM is the Perpustakaan Jakarta (Jakarta Library), a sleek, aesthetically designed library that offers a relaxing reading environment with an extensive collection ranging from fiction and history to economics and encyclopedias. Best of all, entrance is free, though you need to make an online reservation via [perpustakaan.jakarta.go.id](http://perpustakaan.jakarta.go.id).

The revitalization also improved visitor facilities, such as new exhibition spaces, eateries, and parking areas. TIM is open daily from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM, though some areas like the library have varying hours, typically from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM on weekdays and extended hours on weekends.

3. Kota Tua Jakarta (Jakarta Old Town)

Kota Tua, Jakarta’s historical district, has also been transformed with better pedestrian access and improved transport connections, including the nearby Commuter Line and Transjakarta bus stops. This makes the area more accessible, allowing visitors to explore the charming colonial-era buildings and streets at ease.

The area has also been made more pedestrian-friendly, with new walkways, benches, and shady trees along the streets. Cars no longer dominate the streets, and it’s a joy to wander the area on foot or rent a vintage bike from Paguyuban Onthel Kota Tua. Rentals start at IDR 20,000 (USD 1.30) for 30 minutes and include a quirky hat to complete the look.

For those looking to bring home a unique souvenir, Pasar Pisang (Banana Market) offers an array of items such as keychains, traditional snacks, bags, and T-shirts featuring Jakarta’s iconic landmarks. Prices start at IDR 35,000 (USD 2.25), with discounts on bundles.

Kota Tua is also a hub for photographers, as the area is now beautifully restored, with freshly painted buildings that retain their vintage charm but have a much more inviting appeal.

Tips for Visiting:

- Timing: To avoid crowds, it’s best to visit TMII early in the morning or later in the evening when the water fountain shows start. Similarly, Kota Tua is best explored during the weekday mornings when it’s quieter.

- Weather: Jakarta can get quite hot and humid, so don’t forget to stay hydrated and wear comfortable clothes, especially when walking around Kota Tua or TMII.

- Cashless Payments: Most places in these revamped attractions now offer cashless payment options, so it’s essential to have a charged smartphone or bank card for purchases.

Whether for a cultural journey, a relaxing stroll, or an immersive adventure in Jakarta’s past, these three destinations offer something for every traveler. From the eco-friendly TMII to the modernized cultural spaces of TIM and the charming streets of Kota Tua, Jakarta’s tourism scene is truly evolving for the better. Make sure to visit these newly updated attractions and experience the city like never before!
