Lampung State Museum “Ruwa Jurai” – National Museum

Lampung State Museum “Ruwa Jurai” is a general museum (Museum Umum) located in Bandar Lampung, Lampung Province, Indonesia. The museum is officially registered in the National Museum registry (Pendaftaran Museum Nasional) and is part of the Museum Indonesia network, dedicated to preserving cultural and historical heritage. 

The name “Ruwa Jurai” means “two kinds of descent,” reflecting the traditional Lampung cultural identity of the Saibatinand Pepadun communities living harmoniously within the province. 

 

Type & Classification

This museum is classified as a Type A General Museum, indicating a broad collection scope and important role in cultural education, research, and preservation. 

 

History of the Museum

The development of the museum began around 1975/76, with construction progressing over the following years. It was officially inaugurated on 24 September 1988 by the Indonesian Minister of Education and Culture, Prof. Dr. Fuad Hasan, during the International Literacy Day celebration. Over time, the institution became a regional technical implementation unit (UPTD) under the Lampung provincial government. 

 

Management

The museum is owned and operated by the Lampung Provincial Government under the Department of Education and Culture, focusing on collection conservation, exhibition programs, and public education about local heritage. 

 

Museum Collections

Ruwa Jurai Museum houses more than 4,500 cultural and historical artifacts, covering categories such as geological, biological, ethnographic, archaeological, historical, numismatic, textual, ceramic, fine arts, and technological objects. Its ethnographic collection, which includes ceremonial accessories, traditional attire, and ritual artifacts of the Lampung people, is especially prominent and educational.

Vision: To become a leading museum with excellence in cultural preservation, protection, and utilization of heritage objects for strengthening the community identity of Sai Bumi Ruwa Jurai and contributing to Indonesia’s cultural advancement. 

Mission: The museum’s mission includes improving collection management, enhancing museum functions in research and public engagement, raising cultural appreciation, and supporting institutional and human resource development in cultural sectors.
