Nan Baanjuang Traditional House Museum: Preserving Minangkabau Culture

The Nan Baanjuang Traditional House Museum is officially registered in the Museum Registration system and included in the Indonesian Museum network. Located in Bukittinggi City, West Sumatra Province, Indonesia, this museum plays an important role in preserving and presenting museum collections that reflect the traditions and history of the Minangkabau people. 

 

What Is Nan Baanjuang Traditional House Museum?

This institution is a general museum housed in a traditional Minangkabau Rumah Gadang structure that has been repurposed to display cultural artifacts and historical objects for public education and appreciation. The building was constructed on 1 July 1935 by Mr. Mondelar Countrolleur, a Dutch administrator, and originally served as a traditional house before becoming a museum.

  • Museum Category: General Museum – featuring diverse cultural and historic artifacts. 
  • Museum Type: Type C Museum – highlighting its role as an educational and cultural heritage resource at the regional level. 

 

Management & Ownership

The museum is owned by the Government of Bukittinggi City and managed by the Department of Education and Culture of Bukittinggi. The management is responsible for maintaining the building and collection as well as presenting informative exhibitions for visitors. 

 

History of the Museum

Originally a traditional Rumah Gadang Bagonjong Gajah Maharam, the building that houses the museum was constructed in 1935 within the Botanical Park and Cultural Zoo area in Bukittinggi. Its architecture reflects traditional Minangkabau design with wooden floors, bamboo walls, and a distinctive roof made of ijuk fibers. 

Over time, the structure was transformed into a museum to showcase the cultural heritage and history of the Minangkabau people. 

 

Museum Collections

The museum holds approximately 600 historical items representing cultural practices, traditional clothing, daily life tools, and other artifacts revealing the history and identity of the local community. 

Collections include:

  • Traditional architecture models and representations. 
  • Traditional attire and jewelry of Minangkabau people.
  • Household objects and traditional livelihood tools.
  • Artifacts related to local arts, martial arts, history, and preserved animals.

The museum’s vision is to be a repository of Minangkabau heritage, preserving and showcasing cultural objects and narratives for educational and cultural understanding.

To achieve its vision, the museum’s mission includes:

  1. Serving as the primary venue for preserving Minangkabau cultural objects.
  2. Documenting the history and culture of the Minangkabau people.
  3. Conducting collection research and cultural enrichment.
  4. Providing a reference for historical and cultural studies.
  5. Ensuring the transmission of traditional values and heritage.
  6. Becoming a key destination for cultural education and tourism.
