What Is Museum Maritim Indonesia?

Museum Maritim Indonesia is a specialized museum that focuses on Indonesia’s maritime and port heritage. It is officially registered under the National Museum Registration Number (NPNM) 31.72.K.02.0357, confirming its formal status as a museum institution in Indonesia.

The museum aims to serve as a medium for education, recreation, and a maritime information center oriented toward Indonesia’s past, present, and future as a maritime nation.

Museum Maritim Indonesia occupies a designated heritage building located within the Tanjung Priok Port area. Before being repurposed as a museum, the building functioned as the office of PT Pelabuhan Indonesia II, Tanjung Priok Branch.

The initial inauguration, or soft launching, of Museum Maritim Indonesia was held on December 7, 2018. To date, the museum remains in preparation for its official grand launching, alongside the ongoing development of concepts, collections, and supporting facilities.

Type and Classification of the Museum

Based on museum classification, Museum Maritim Indonesia falls under the category of a Specialized Museum, as it focuses on a single thematic field—maritime affairs. In terms of institutional status, the museum is currently not yet standardized, but it is professionally managed in accordance with modern museum management practices.

Ownership and Management

The museum is owned by PT Pelabuhan Indonesia II (Indonesia Port Corporation/IPC), a state-owned enterprise operating in the port sector. The operational management of Museum Maritim Indonesia is carried out by PT Pendidikan Maritim dan Logistik, a subsidiary of IPC that focuses on the development of education and human resources in the maritime and logistics sectors.

At present, Museum Maritim Indonesia does not yet have a permanent collection (0 collections). However, collection development remains one of the management’s main priorities, in line with the museum’s long-term plan to meet international collection management standards.

Vision of Museum Maritim Indonesia

The vision of Museum Maritim Indonesia is:

“To establish a representative, internationally recognized Museum Maritim Indonesia as a source of recreation, education, and information in preserving and communicating corporate roles and national cultural values.”

Mission of Museum Maritim Indonesia

To achieve this vision, Museum Maritim Indonesia has six main missions:

  1. To communicate the identity, role, and contribution of Indonesia Port Corporation (IPC) to national development.
  2. To serve as a promotional and motivational platform for younger generations in realizing Indonesia as a global maritime axis.
  3. To enhance understanding of maritime history and cultural values in strengthening national identity.
  4. To preserve and develop Museum Maritim Indonesia sustainably for educational and recreational purposes.
  5. To provide research facilities and opportunities for developing port and maritime knowledge through the museum and library.
  6. To implement collection management in accordance with international standards.

As a center for maritime education and information, Museum Maritim Indonesia plays a strategic role in strengthening public understanding of Indonesia’s identity as a maritime nation.

Through sustainable management and the development of adaptive and innovative concepts, Museum Maritim Indonesia is expected to grow into an educational and recreational destination that remains relevant to modern society.

The museum also has the potential to become a source of inspiration for younger generations in realizing Indonesia as a global maritime axis, while reinforcing the nation’s maritime position at both regional and international levels.
