The Mpu Purwa Museum is an officially registered institution in the Museum Registration system of Indonesia with the registration number 35.73.K.05.0052, and is part of the Museum Indonesia network. Located in Malang, East Java, it preserves, interprets, and displays archaeological artifacts that reflect centuries of historical development in the region.

Owned by the City Government of Malang, the museum is managed by the Department of Education and Culture of Malang City. The management oversees the care of collections, exhibition planning, educational programs, and public access to history. 

 

History of the Museum

Originally established as the Balai Penyelamatan Benda Purbakala (Archaeological Rescue Center) to safeguard historical objects found around Malang, the institution was officially inaugurated as Mpu Purwa Museum in 2004. The museum underwent revitalization supported by the Indonesian Ministry of Culture, culminating in a modernized facility reopened in 2018

The museum is named after Mpu Purwa, a revered Buddhist priest and cultural figure from ancient Javanese history, symbolizing the continuity of wisdom and heritage. 

 

Museum Collections

Museum Collections at Mpu Purwa include around 100+ historical objects:

  • Sculptures and statues dating to ancient kingdoms, including figures such as Brahma Catur Muka and Ganesha Tikus. 
  • Ancient inscriptions like Prasasti Dinoyo 2, offering insights into land grants and societal structures. 
  • Archaeological relics from kingdoms including Kanjuruhan, Mataram, Kadiri, Singhasari, and Majapahit. 

These collections offer visitors a window into Indonesia’s rich historical tapestry.
