Samudra Raksa Ship Museum

What Is Samudra Raksa Ship Museum?

The Samudra Raksa Ship Museum is a maritime and history museum located within the Borobudur Temple Tourism Park, Magelang, Central Java, Indonesia. The museum showcases the Samudra Raksa ship replica, based on ancient reliefs from Borobudur Temple, and interprets Indonesia’s rich maritime past through its collections and exhibitions.

Officially inaugurated on August 31, 2005, the museum is part of the Museum Indonesia registration system, highlighting its contribution to preserving and presenting Indonesia’s maritime heritage for both local and international visitors.

History of the Museum

The museum was established around a full-scale reconstruction of the Samudra Raksa ship, inspired by Panel 86 of the Jataka-Avadana relief at Borobudur Temple. Constructed by joined teams of historians, craftsmen, and researchers, this vessel successfully undertook an epic voyage from Jakarta to Accra, Ghana as a reenactment of the ancient spice trade route known as the Cinnamon Route

The name “Samudra Raksa” — meaning Guardian of the Ocean — was bestowed by then-President Megawati Sukarnoputri, symbolizing Indonesia’s long maritime tradition and capabilities.
