History of Museum Affandi
The Museum Lukis Affandi was originally initiated by Affandi himself as a gallery for his paintings. The first gallery was completed in 1962 and designed by Affandi, inspired by banana leaf stalks. This design philosophy stemmed from his childhood memories, when banana leaves were used to provide comfort and protection for family members suffering from smallpox.
The first gallery was officially inaugurated in 1974 by the Director General of Culture, Prof. Ida Bagus Mantra. In 1987, with support from President Soeharto, a second gallery was constructed and inaugurated in 1988 by the Minister of Education and Culture, Prof. Dr. Fuad Hasan. Since September 24, 1984, the museum has been managed by the Affandi Foundation.
A third gallery was added in 1997 to enhance facilities, including exhibition spaces, offices, a restoration room, storage areas, and a viewing tower overlooking the Gajah Wong River. This gallery was inaugurated in 2000 by Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwana X.
