The Nurut Taubah Mosque, which means “the light of repentance,” was established by Kyai Haji Muhammad Thahir, better known as Imam Lapeo, in 1902. Initially, the mosque was a small prayer house (langgar), which was gradually expanded until 1916. The name “Nurut Taubah” was given because the people of Polewali Mandar previously adhered to animistic beliefs. The arrival of Imam Lapeo transformed the community by introducing Islam. Over time, the Nurut Taubah Mosque became a center for Islamic preaching in Polewali Mandar.
