Masjid Jami Merdeka

The Jami Merdeka Mosque is the first mosque in Manokwari. The establishment of this mosque cannot be separated from the history of the arrival of Islamic sailors and traders from the Tidore Sultanate. According to an anthropologist from the University of Indonesia, Koentjoroningrat, said that from folklore and information from Tidore, in the 15th century Biak had become the territory of the Islamic Sultanate of Tidore. Then, a handwritten manuscript in the Tidorean language found in Manokwari tells that on August 18 1812, the Sultan of Tidore, Danu Sayid Muhammad Alting and his younger brother, Danu Muhammad Hasan, accompanied by Tolawa Marwa (Wazir of the Sultanate), landed on Mansinam Island in West Manokwari (Arfaq Media Team, 2015).
