Cakraningrat Museum

Cakraningrat Museum is a public museum located in Bangkalan Regency, East Java Province, Indonesia. The museum serves as a center for the preservation, storage, and exhibition of historical and cultural artifacts from Bangkalan, particularly those related to the legacy of the Bangkalan Sultanate (Keraton Bangkalan) and Madurese cultural heritage.

Designed as an educational space for history, culture, and local traditions, the museum is open to the general public, including students, researchers, and tourists who wish to gain deeper insight into the history and culture of Madura. Situated on Jalan Soekarno Hatta No. 35, Bangkalan District, the museum is easily accessible from the city center and stands as one of the key historical tourism destinations on Madura Island.

History of Cakraningrat Museum

The origins of Cakraningrat Museum can be traced back to an initiative by the Bangkalan local government and cultural observers to reunite historical objects and documents of the Bangkalan Sultanate that were scattered among private collections. Initially, these artifacts were stored in the complex of the Royal Cemetery of Bangkalan, known as Pesarean Aer Mata.

In 1975, the collection was moved to a building within the Pendopo Agung Bangkalan complex and came under official management by the local government. The building was later designated as a museum under the name Museum Daerah Level II Bangkalan.

To enhance public appreciation of Bangkalan’s historical heritage, the collection was eventually relocated to a more representative building. The museum was officially inaugurated on March 13, 2008, under the name Cakraningrat Museum, in honor of the royal title held by the rulers who once governed Bangkalan.

Since its inauguration, the museum has continued to grow. Today, its collection is estimated to consist of thousands of items, including traditional musical instruments, weapons, household tools, and artifacts believed to be more than two centuries old.

Type and Management of the Museum

Cakraningrat Museum is classified as a general museum (Type C), meaning its collections cover a broad range of historical and cultural themes rather than focusing on a single subject. The museum collects, preserves, maintains, and displays cultural objects that reflect the social, cultural, and historical life of the Madurese people from the past to the present.

As a Type C general museum, Cakraningrat Museum houses diverse collections, ranging from military artifacts and traditional household equipment to manuscripts, musical instruments, and royal heirlooms. This diversity makes the museum an important reference center for historical education and cultural studies related to Madura.

The museum is owned by the Government of Bangkalan Regency and managed by the Department of Youth, Sports, Culture, and Tourism of Bangkalan Regency. This institution is responsible for collection preservation, exhibition management, visitor services, and the development of educational programs such as school visits and cultural activities.

The museum is open to the public with very affordable admission fees, allowing access for visitors from various backgrounds.
