Multatuli Museum

The Multatuli Museum is a significant historical museum located in Rangkasbitung, Lebak Regency, Banten, Indonesia. It showcases colonial history, anti-colonial movements, and the legacy of Dutch colonial official-turned-author Multatuli (Eduard Douwes Dekker)

As part of the broader landscape of National Museums and Museum Indonesia, this museum provides visitors with educational insights into colonial experiences and nationalism as reflected in literature and regional histories. 

 

What Is Multatuli Museum?

The museum was officially opened on 11 February 2018 in a historical building that originally served as the Wedana’s office in Rangkasbitung since 1923. It honors Multatuli, a colonial administrator whose experiences in Lebak inspired his famous novel Max Havelaar, which critiqued colonial governance and social injustice. 

The building is now designated as a cultural heritage site and serves as an important educational space that complements Indonesia’s rich museum ecosystem. 

 

Museum Type and Themes

Multatuli Museum is a general history museum with major thematic focuses:

  • Anti-colonialism, illustrating resistance to colonial rule;
  • Local history of Lebak and Banten;
  • Multatuli’s life and literary contributions

Exhibits are organized into seven galleries with four major thematic sections, providing a comprehensive exploration of historical narratives. 

 

Management and Mission

The museum is owned and operated by the Lebak Regency Government through the Cultural and Tourism Office. Its mission includes documenting regional history, communicating anti-colonial themes, and providing engaging educational activities for all visitors. 

The vision emphasizes the museum’s role as an interactive cultural hub that supports historical learning and community engagement. 

 

Collections of the Museum

Key collections include:

  • A first edition of Max Havelaar;
  • Dioramas depicting life during the colonial period;
  • Photographs and documents related to Eduard Douwes Dekker and colonial history;
  • Sculptures representing characters from Multatuli’s novel. 

The museum also features audiovisual rooms, a library, garden areas, and modern exhibition spaces that enhance the visitor experience. 

 

Museum Indonesia and Registration

Multatuli Museum is part of the larger network of Museum Indonesia, which includes officially registered museums under the management of the Ministry of Education and Culture catalog. Registration enables museums to gain national recognition and access preservation support and development resources.
