Bengkulu State Museum – National Museum

What Is Bengkulu State Museum?

Bengkulu State Museum (Museum Negeri Bengkulu) is a cultural and historical institution located in Bengkulu City, Bengkulu Province, Indonesia, registered in the National Museum registry (Pendaftaran Museum Nasional) with number 17.71.U.03.0017. It is part of the Museum Indonesia network dedicated to preserving and presenting Indonesian heritage. 

 

Type & Classification

The museum is classified as a General Museum (Museum Umum) with Type B, indicating it holds diverse collections with educational, historical, and cultural significance. 

 

Museum History

The museum’s establishment began in 1978, and it first operated on 3 May 1980 at a temporary location near Fort Marlborough. On 3 January 1983, it moved to its current site on Jalan Pembangunan No. 8, Padang Harapan. The museum was officially inaugurated as a state museum on 31 March 1988 by the Director General of Culture. 

 

Museum Management

Bengkulu State Museum is owned by the Government of Bengkulu Province and managed by the Department of Education and Culture. The management oversees conservation, exhibitions, educational programming, and community outreach. 

 

Museum Collections

The museum holds more than 4,500 collections across multiple categories, including biological specimens, cultural artifacts, archaeological finds, written manuscripts, traditional tools, and artworks representing the region’s diverse communities.

Vision: To be a professional center for preserving heritage, educating the public, and serving as a cultural destination in Bengkulu. 

Mission: Its mission includes improved collection care, informative exhibits, cultural programs, and supporting academic research.
