Museum Alkitab LAI

Indonesia is home to many thematic museums that preserve history, culture, and spirituality. One of the most significant institutions in the field of religious education is the Museum Alkitab LAI, located in Central Jakarta. This museum plays an important role in introducing the history of the Bible, its translation process, and the cultural context behind it.

Managed by the Indonesian Bible Society Foundation (LAI), Museum Alkitab LAI is designed not only for Christian communities but also for the general public. It enriches Indonesia’s educational and religious tourism landscape by offering meaningful insights into biblical heritage.

Historical Background of Museum Alkitab LAI

The history of Museum Alkitab LAI began with the establishment of the LAI Translation Department Library in Bogor in 1980. Initially, the library served translators and consultants involved in Bible translation projects.

In 1998, LAI initiated plans to expand the library into a Biblical Library and Museum accessible to the public. This vision materialized with the official establishment of the Library and Museum LAI on July 25, 2002. In 2012, the museum was relocated to the Bible Center Building (Gedung Pusat Alkitab) on Salemba Raya, Central Jakarta, where it remains today.

Museum Alkitab LAI is a specialized museum dedicated to the Bible, its translation history, and cultural elements related to the biblical world. It was developed as an extension of LAI’s library to serve as a public educational space.

The museum is officially registered with the National Museum Registration Number (NPNM) 31.21.K.06.0326 and is fully owned and managed by the Indonesian Bible Society Foundation (LAI).
