The Indonesia Science Center is a general museum focused on science and technology, located in Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII), East Jakarta. Officially registered in Indonesia’s Museum Registration system as part of the Museum Indonesia network with registration number 31.75.K.01.0186, it plays a pivotal role in science education through interactive exhibits and public engagement. 

Also known as Pusat Peragaan Ilmu Pengetahuan dan Teknologi (PP-IPTEK), the museum combines hands-on learning with entertaining displays to encourage science exploration among children, students, and families.

History of the Museum

The idea for a science center in Indonesia was initiated by Prof. Dr. B.J. Habibie in 1984 during his tenure as Minister of Research and Technology. A working committee developed the concept for a science learning space as part of TMII’s educational attractions. 

The center was officially inaugurated on 20 April 1991, with its permanent futuristic building completed on 10 November 1995, offering extensive interactive displays to visitors.

The museum’s collections feature more than a dozen interactive exhibits, including: 

  • Earthquake simulators
  • Cable-wire bicycles
  • Van de Graaff generators
  • Tesla coils
  • Interactive mirror maze
  • Laser trap displays
  • Music-based instruments like piano angklung
  • 4XD science studio

These exhibits provide hands-on science experiences that deepen comprehension through direct interaction.

  4. Establishing PP-IPTEK as a national reference for science centers in Indonesia.

Registered as a part of Indonesia’s Museum Nasional database, the Indonesia Science Center contributes to the preservation of science education resources and supports lifelong learning.
