Historical Background of Roemah Martha Tilaar

Officially inaugurated on December 6, 2014, Roemah Martha Tilaar was founded by Wulan Tilaar as a tribute to her mother’s lifelong dream of contributing to her hometown. The museum occupies a historic family residence originally built in 1920.

The house once belonged to the family of Liem Siaw Law, also known as Baba Solam, a prominent Chinese-Indonesian entrepreneur in Gombong. Architecturally, the building blends Dutch, Javanese, and Chinese styles, visible in its layout, ancestral altar, and corridor partitions.

Roemah Martha Tilaar, also known as the Gombong Cultural Museum, is a special museum established to honor Dr. Martha Tilaar, a prominent Indonesian figure and pioneer of local-based beauty and wellness industries. The museum presents family history, cultural narratives, and values that shaped her life and contributions.
